Custom MX and A Records
Discover more about MX records and A records to see exactly where they sit within the DNS system.
The term “hosting” doesn't describe only one service, but a variety of services which provide numerous functions to a domain. Having a site and emails, for instance, are two separate services despite the fact that in the general case they come together, so most of the people consider them as one single service. In fact, each domain name has a number of DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that deals with each specific service - the first one is a numeric IP address, which defines where the website for the domain is loaded from, while the latter is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that deals with the emails for the domain address. As an illustration, an A record would be 123.123.123.123 and an MX record is mx1.domain.com. Every time you open a site or send an e-mail, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a Internet domain has and the traffic/message is first directed to that company. In case you have custom records on their end, the Internet browser request or the e-mail will be sent to the correct server. The concept behind using separate records is that the two services employ different web protocols and you could have your site hosted by one service provider and the e-mail messages by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Cloud Hosting
If you have a
cloud hosting account through our company and you would like to point either your website or your emails to a different service provider, it is going to take you literally just 2 mouse clicks to do so. Our Hepsia CP comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains will be listed alphabetically and you'll be able to see and edit the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you wish to use a different email provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the standard two, it won't take more than a few mouse clicks either to add them. You could also set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the greater the priority a particular MX record will have. The propagation of every record that you modify or create will not take more than several hours and if necessary, you will also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, that shows how long a record will stay active after it is modified or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Servers
The Hepsia hosting Control Panel, provided with our
Linux semi-dedicated hosting plans, will enable you to see the A and MX records for any of the domains or subdomains in your account and if necessary, to edit any of them or create new ones. Managing these records is quite easy because all domains/subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically, so editing a record is as easy as entering it in a box and saving the change. Setting up a new one takes a few more clicks and in case you experience any troubles, you can check out our educational videos on how to set up A and MX records. Our system is user-friendly enough to be used by people with little or no previous experience, yet sophisticated enough to give you 100 % control of all records and to permit you to have different A records even for domain.com and www.domain.com. If you are switching your e-mails to a different company and they ask you to set up more than 2 different MX records, you can choose the priority of each one.
